About this Group

This series explores executive function skills to provide a clearer understanding of what they are, how they develop, how they can create challenges, and how to build them up. The series aims to provide practical strategies and systems to help get the hard stuff done by better understanding what gets in the way and what makes it so hard.

What this series looks like:

➢ Hosted live via Zoom each week by Executive Function Skill (and ADHD) coaches Mara Dauber and Kinnavey Cunningham, each session will provide 30 minutes of guided content, followed by 15 minutes of Q&A

➢ Participants will not be seen on screen, but are invited (and encouraged) to engage using the chat and Q&A features on Zoom

➢ 8 individual sessions to best explore these skill sets in terms of:

  • Cognition (our thinking/awareness)

  • Activation (getting started)

  • Action (doing the work)

  • Completion (getting things done)

➢ Additional materials, resources and a recording will be provided after each session (posted within 48 hours)

The goals of this series are:

➢ Support participants in reflecting upon their own practices, strengths, and areas for growth

➢ Provide participants with clear definitions of 12 executive functioning skills (skills that teens are developing and can be strengthened)

➢ Break down each skill and provide clear examples of specific practices that participants may take up in their own lives

➢ Facilitate activities for self-reflection and practicing of particular skills

Topics

  • Session 1: Introduction to Executive Function Skills

  • Session 2: (Cognition) Metacognition - thinking about our thinking

  • Session 3: (Cognition) Emotion Regulation and Cognitive Flexibility - managing emotions, checking in, and dealing with transitions and adjustments

  • Session 4: (Activation) Organization, Planning, Prioritization, and Time - creating a doable plan

  • Session 5: (Activation) Task Initiation - how to get started on the stuff that’s hard to start

  • Session 6: (Action) Focus (Sustained Attention) and Working Memory - regulating attention and holding information in our head
