About the Group

This group will include equal parts didactic and discussion regarding the skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to cope with ADHD related issues of emotional regulation, distress tolerance and executive functioning. The skills will be presented and practiced in the group and through homework exercises. DBT stresses the importance of “mindfulness” which helps quiet the mind, increases ability to focus and makes more effective behavior choices. DBT focuses on the present reality, not the past, and “radically” accepting reality. Accepting the reality of having an ADHD neurodiverse brain, and all its challenges, yet embracing the “dialectic” of ADHD strengths, opens the door to determine what can be changed with work.

This group will be led by Paula Jones, LCSW. Paula has led similar DBT groups over the last 3 years and is currently writing a book on DBT Skills for ADHD. Paula is not only a professional specializing in ADHD, she has ADHD herself and tries to model the dialectic of acceptance and change, a work in process.

About Paula

Paula Jones is a therapist and former special education teacher, who has been working with children and adults with ADHD for over 30 years. She trained with Ned Hallowell, MD, in Boston when he began his coaching program in the 90’s after Driven to Distraction became a best seller.

She recognized her own adult ADHD when her daughter was diagnosed at 6 yrs, and after reading "Driven to Distraction", felt empowered to disclose her own ADHD to her clients. She credits ADHD with her endless energy, creativity, openness to take risks , and living a full and meaningful life, as well as her chronic disorganization.

  • She graduated with honors from Indiana University in Education and was awarded a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to pursue her master’s in Social Work. After a successful private practice in Indiana, specializing in children with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders, she moved to California and went back to the classroom as a special education teacher.

She has taught in international schools in four different countries, including Kenya, where she started a volunteer service club with the Kenya Autism Support Center, providing socialization opportunities for handicapped children who lived in the slums, and created a scholarship program for indigenous Massai girls, programs which continue to serve children. Returning to California, she worked as a psychiatric social worker at the Veteran’s Administration before joining Hallowell Todaro in 2021.

A life learner, she is trained in evidence-based treatment methods, is certified by the Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy Institute. She provides EMDR for trauma, depression, and anxiety disorders She also utilizes Dialectical Behavior Therapy and recently created a skills-based DBT group focusing on how to apply those strategies to ADHD challenges, and is writing a book on DBT for ADHD. Cognitive Behavior Therapy skills are also integrated into her practice since training with Aaron and Judith Beck at the International Cognitive Behavior Therapy Conference in Copenhagen.

Paula believes the therapeutic relationship forms the foundation for acceptance as well as change. She sees therapy as a process of psychoeducation, inspiration, and learning more effective ways of thinking and coping with life’s inevitable challenges. She enjoys working with individuals and couples, and leading groups for Hallowell Todaro.
