What led you to pursue a career helping others?

I have always been drawn to deep, meaningful relationships. I also love change and new ideas. I appreciate working in a helping career because I get to develop thoughtful relationships with clients, while continually learning from others, collaborating, and growing. The meaningful relationships I had growing up reinforce the importance of a support system and I believe that a support system can come in the form of family, friends, and those in the community around a person.

What education, skills, and expertise do you bring to your role?

I used to be a cheesemaker, I ran a non-profit organization that taught food education to elementary-aged students, I was a middle school math teacher at a school for students with language-based learning differences. My diverse career background has taught me how to be flexible, organized, and eager to learn. I love working with others to problem solve and navigate the complex world around us.

My current schooling in school counseling has given me great insight on how to support students so that they can thrive at school. I do this by helping people recognize their strengths, develop advocacy skills and break down complex work into digestible steps.

Who/what inspires you?

I am continually inspired by those around me. I am particularly inspired by my students. The way they persevere despite challenges is admirable and something to strive for. I am motivated by my students’ creativity and their ability to develop resilience through relationships, awareness, and communication.

What’s your personal philosophy/approach toward the work you do?

I believe in a growth mindset, that making mistakes is a positive thing and that we all have an amazing opportunity to learn from each other. I know that each person's strengths can help them thrive and I know that our society does not always support our strengths in the most obvious ways. I believe each client’s story to be the truth and that my role is to support their truth so they can grow and change in the ways they would like. I strive to listen and support my clients by understanding their goals, seeing my role as a way to support them through empathy, understanding, and forward-thinking strategies.

What is one small thing people can do to improve their lives and increase their happiness?

Move around a bit every day! Especially in the world of virtual work and school, we find ourselves sitting more than ever. Taking a quick walk around the block or every just a minute on the front porch to breathe some fresh air does amazing things for productivity and creativity.
