Lauren Wilson, MSW

Position at the Hallowell Todaro ADHD Center:

ADHD Coach

How long have you been working at the Hallowell Todaro ADHD Center?

About a week!

Where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in San Marcos, Texas!

What are your favorite books / TV shows / movies?

Currently, I love reading and re-reading books by Brené Brown. My favorite one of hers is Daring Greatly. Some of my favorite shows are Seinfeld, The Office, Peaky Blinders, and Barefoot Contessa.

What is your favorite sport and/or sports team?

Soccer is my favorite sport to play, and I love cheering for the San Antonio Spurs during basketball season.

Complete the following sentences:

When I’m not at work, you can find me....

at the lake, on a hike, anywhere involving food, especially free food.

When I want to de-stress, I...

watch Bob Ross’ painting videos, get a pedicure, listen to podcasts.

My favorite time of year is...

fall – in Seattle. The fall colors captivate me every year!

My favorite thing to cook is...

Indian food – tandoori chicken.

The best gift I ever received was...

a one-way plane ticket to Seattle. It was an opportunity to be with my sister and form a close relationship with my new-born niece (at the time) while I attended graduate school – among countless other opportunities and experiences it provided.

If I could travel anywhere in the world, I’d go to...

Japan or Germany.

What led you to pursue a career helping others?

For as long as I can remember, I have always had a strong faith in human connection, diversity and commitment to one another. Part of this evolved out of Christian faith, growing up with my father who is an Episcopal priest, and who inspired me from a young age to tolerate and embrace human differences, always remain curious, and seek out the good in all others I meet.

What education, skills and expertise do you bring to your role?

I am proud to associate myself with my Master’s degree in Social Work because of the values, skills and knowledge that the Social Work profession represents. I believe my biggest contributions to my role are my commitment and ability to cultivate authentic relationships, optimism and enthusiasm, ability to advocate, and educate and empower others to self-advocate.

Who/what inspires you?

Teamwork, listening to/reading books by Brené Brown, a quote I heard from a friend who said “doing things you’ve never done before – that’s what you do; you reinvent yourself,” the idea of never stopping at defining who you are and what you can do.

What’s your personal philosophy/approach toward the work you do?

The most meaningful way I can enjoy the work that I do is when I meet clients where they are and do my best to eliminate a sense of hierarchy (I am the provider/coach/social worker, you are the client), and relate to them as human beings.

What is one small thing people can do to improve their lives and increase their happiness?

Keeping a log of one highlight for each day. I try to remember to record something daily in mine and I enjoy referring to it to help me remember all the good things happening in my life and to remind myself that often times, it is the most simple things that bring me the most meaning and happiness.
