What led you to pursue a career helping others?
What led you to pursue a career helping others? When I was a child my younger brother (by 8 years) had severe ADHD. He struggled in school, making friends and keeping them. I always felt bad that things were so difficult for him and wished people at his school could help him. At that time I didn’t understand why no one was helping him with these things (or providing support for my parents).
When I graduated college I started working in a different field, through those experiences I realized I wanted to go back to school, get my masters degree, and learn how to help kids, adolescents and adults like my brother navigate the academic/social/emotional/career world with an understanding of what life was like for them.
What education, skills and expertise do you bring to your role?
Aside from what I learned in graduate school and during my internship and practicum opportunities, my real world experiences are lessons that keep on teaching.
I had first hand experience as an older sibling of someone with ADHD. I understood what it was like to live with someone with ADHD, how to manage day to day tasks like taking medication and organization. My first job out of graduate school was as a counselor at an elementary school. It was an amazing experience to be working at a school-I gained a thorough understanding of the complexity of a classroom and student expectations at different grade levels. Furthermore, I’m a mom to three amazing kids. My husband and I are right there in the trenches with my clients (of all ages) and practice what I preach on a daily basis at home.
Who/what inspires you?
My clients inspire me each and every day. I learn something new about myself from them, but also about how to support others in new ways that I hadn’t thought of before. These experiences keep me inspired and motivated to do what I do.
What’s your personal philosophy/approach toward the work you do?
Empathy, kindness, and mindfulness are the pillars of my work with clients. Each person that I see deserves empathy, kindness and my present attention. They deserve to be heard and have a voice, and I am there to listen and support them.
What is one small thing people can do to improve their lives and increase their happiness?
Partake/practice in self care! Whatever that means to you, do it!
