What led you to pursue a career helping others?
I have been a teacher, a mom, a tutor, a girl scout leader,a volunteer at the kids schools, a substitute teacher and a soccer coach so I have spent most of life helping others. When I first became a parent coach in the early 2000’s I knew that I wanted to help other families avoid the mistakes I hadmade and learn the best possible way to parent a child with ADHD.
What education, skills and expertise do you bring to your role?
I have BA in Early Childhood Education, I am a Screamfree Leader, and I have gone through training in Positive Parenting. Most importantly, I am the mom of three children who have ADHD and both my husband and I have ADHD. My experience in parenting children with ADHD gives me a unique perspective on what day-to-day life is like. I lived the through chaos and found ways that worked well for my family, and I wanted to share that insight with other parents.
Who/what inspires you?
My colleagues at the Hallowell Todaro Center inspire me every day. And the parents who come in to work me also inspire me.
What’s your personal philosophy/approach toward the work you do?
I coach from a very strength-based approach. I do not feel as if I am parenting expert—the parents I work with are the experts on their children. My job is to give them some information on ADHD and some strategies to help them in their everyday life. It’s also to help them get some clarity around what they want their parenting to look like, and then to help them achieve their goals. I also truly believe that ADHD is a gift and I would never want to be without that gift.
What is one small thing people can do to improve their lives and increase their happiness?
Slow down.
As a parent coach, Peggy is committed to helping parents raise their children in a fun, calm, and connected household. Our parent coaches provide support specifically for parents of children with ADHD through our Parent Survival Basket program, available as a group workshop or in private sessions.
