What led you to pursue a career in helping others?

When I was a young child, my Mormor (Norwegian for mother’s mother) would take me along when she would volunteer for a variety of social, healthcare, and environmental organizations. I met so many people around our community and loved hearing the stories people would share. These adventures with Mormor were the most powerful and formative learning experiences I had as a child and I always knew I would find a career that involved storytelling and collaborating with people.

What education, skills and expertise do you bring to your role?

The majority of my career has been in higher education, working in admissions, student success, career counseling, academic services, eLearning, program development and human resources. I moved out of higher education into mental healthcare because I want to work more with people and less on behalf of systems. As a coach with the Hallowell Todaro ADHD Center I get to bring all of the areas I’ve worked in together, add a dash of executive function skill-building and voilà, I’m using all the education, skills and expertise I’ve accumulated over the years. My formal education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in cultural anthropology and a Master of Science degree in clinical mental health Counseling.

Who/what inspires you?

Curiosity inspires me. When humans take an interest in ideas, actions, things, and each other from a place of curiosity and exploration, meaningful connections occur.

What’s your personal philosophy/approach toward the work you do?

As I work with folx, I approach the work through building relationships and bringing my authentic self to the collaboration. Before attending college, I didn’t have a name for this but now I am very much Team Carl Rogers’ person-centered, strengths-based approach with unconditional positive regard.

What is one small thing people can do to improve their lives / increase their happiness?

Embrace your playfulness – silliness and bad puns included.

We provide a range of support for people with ADHD.
