ADHD Advocates Find a Home On TikTok

It’s perhaps unsurprising that a number of people with ADHD have congregated on TikTok. In many ways, the platform is perfectly designed for the ADHD brain—content is highly visual, creative, and succinct (videos have a max. length of 60 seconds), not to mention, a welcome distraction from life’s more mundane tasks.

Indeed, thanks to TikTok, even people without ADHD get to experience the joys of time blindness! There’s never been a social media platform better designed to suck up an hour of your time in what feels like a few minutes. Consider yourself warned.

However, with that screen-time warning in mind, the way people are using TikTok to raise awareness of ADHD among new audiences is worth celebrating. By sharing their own experiences, ‘ADHDers’ are able to debunk tired misconceptions about ADHD and reduce stigmas associated with what many still view as a “deficit disorder.”

For people with ADHD who feel misunderstood in a world designed for neurotypicals, the ADHD TikTok community is a place where they can feel seen.

Dr. Hallowell (@drhallowell)

Hey, we know this guy! Dr Hallowell is proof that TikTok is for everyone, not just Gen Z influencers doing dance challenges. He’s also contributing his expertise as a board-certified psychiatrist, best-selling author, and world-renowned authority on ADHD. His professional wisdom provides a needed balance to the more anecdotal ADHD tips from non-experts on TikTok.

Peter Hyphen (@peterhyphen)

Peter Hyphen’s account mainly consists of two types of videos: anecdotes from his life with ADHD and advice based on those experiences. From his internal monologues during work Zoom calls to tips on dating with ADHD, his friendly videos help an ADHD diagnosis seem less scary and much more manageable.
