What led you to pursue a career in helping others?
Empathy has always been an important virtue of mine and I knew as far back as high school that I wanted to get into a career where I could help people. Originally, I pursued a degree in education with the intent of being a high school teacher. However, when I started studying psychology as a gen-ed requirement, I quickly realized the possibility the field had to transform people’s life on a personal level and achieve their ambitions in life. From there, the decision to pursue counseling as a career wasn’t even a questions. Although I am currently in between a bachelor’s degree and graduate school, I have found a lot of value helping clients in my current role as patient care coordinator.
What education, skills and expertise do you bring to your role?
I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Wright State with a B.A in psychology and a minor in sociology. After my graduation in May of 2022, I spent the following three years as a unit support specialist at TCN Behavioral Health in Kettering, Ohio. Over the years I picked up a lot of secretarial skills like organization and communication. More importantly though, I got to know what a path of treatment, recovery, and stabilization looked like in the realm of substance use, mental health, and psychiatry. As well as received formal training in de-escalation and triaging clients in crisis.
Who/what inspires you?
My mom inspires my current work and continued interest in counseling. Being a counselor of 30+ years herself, I’ have had so many fantastic conversations with her about her experiences and topics in psychology. It’s really incredible to think about the hundreds of people she’s helped over the years and that prospect really keeps me motivated.
What’s your personal philosophy/approach toward the work you do?
My personal approach to work is that everyone I serve in my role is deserving of professionalism, reliability, and compassion. As a patient care coordinator, I am often the first point of contact for our clients or their parents/guardians. And as such, there are so many different circumstances a client may be going through when they decide to pursue our services. My wish is for them to know through my work early on that they can rely on me to effectively organize their care, coordinate with their care team, and to communicate with them in a way that is efficient and easily understandable. When I think of the work I do, I don’t just consider my job as being an admin assistant, but as a person our clients can depend upon.
What are a few small things people can do to increase their happiness?
I’m a firm believer in journaling as part of a regular routine. I think journaling really helps a person stay in tune with themselves, and helps them process and find clarity in life’s most complicated moments.
We provide a range of support for people with ADHD.
